A Twilight Clear
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (October, 2002)
Author: Linda Cook
Average review score:

A Match Well Made
William, a war-weary soldier, returns home to a wife he hardly knows but of whom he dreamt throughout the years he spent in service to his King. Meeting his little daughter and his loyal wife, William finds himself enchanted and enamoured of both. His longing for a life in peace, however, cannot be fulfilled before his secret duty to his King comes to a sucessful end. Without his resolute wife's trust and help, William cannot win his place at home. Can he secure his place in her heart?

Ms. Cook's firm knowledge of her era (the 12th century) makes this story as enjoyable as her earlier works. A Twilight Clear is a satisfying tale for those who particularly like to follow the development of a tender relationship in marriage. The hero and heroine's feelings for one another are firmly in focus here.

Excellent generic view of computers for children
I have used this book as a text for 5th and 6th grade Computer Literacy classes with great success. It was the only book I could find that covered computers, modems, printers, word processsors, graphics, in general.

Unsafe on Any Burner: Misadventures of a Rookie Cook
Published in Hardcover by Fred Gosman (October, 1998)
Author: Fred G. Gosman
Average review score:

A tour d'force of writing!
This masterpiece can only be described as Dave Barry meets Emilio the Chef. Unsafe on Any Burner is filled with histarical anticdotes, recipes, and cooking blunders for the begining cook. Fred Gosman hits a homerun with this hard to put down classic. The humor, wisdom, and prose of this literary triumph would even impress the likes of Mark Twain(god rest his soul). My only complaint is the $23 price tag. Please try to price the book for the likes of the common man. Kudos to Mr. Gosman for this gift to humanity.

Until Day Breaks: A Saga of Texas (Cook, Will. Saga of Texas, Bk. 1.)
Published in Hardcover by Chivers (June, 2000)
Author: Will Cook
Average review score:

A fiction account of the settlement of Indian territory.
This is the first of three volumes of A Saga of Texas. The army is trying to make Texas habital for future settlers. The general in charge is trying to make peace with the Indians, while some his superiors would rather rid the territory of the Indians through war. It is an excellent account of the age-old battle between the 'hawks' and the 'doves'.

Although some of the accounts are not quite believable, the book is very entertaining. I read the book in one day. I cannot wait for the next two volumes to be published.

Usfs 1919 the Ranger the Cook and the Hole in the Sky
Published in Audio Cassette by Northword Audio (November, 1994)
Authors: MacLean and MacLean Norman
Average review score:

Forgotten novella from "A River Runs Through It"
Norman Maclean's "A River Runs Through It" also contains a short story and another novella, "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky." It just might be better than his more well know novella. The novella chronicles the 17-year old Maclean and his job with the nascent United States Forest Service during the summer of 1919. The USFS crew is a collection of misfits, those too young or too old to have seen service in WWI, and before the Forest Service trained professional rangers. This is a rare coming of age story, one tempered by the views and judgments of the 70+ years Maclean had lived before writing th novella. The characters are sharply drawn, the situations comedic and poignant, and the observations totally unvarnished.

Vashti and the strange God

Author: Gladys Moon Cook

A book that makes a lasting impression
As a child I read this book. I have to say that it's story has stayed with me over the last 25 years or so. As I read it I felt as if I were in India. I learned about the caste system, the poverty of Calcutta and the horrors of life for the people in the slums there. The character of Vasthi is very real and her struggles are ones that any person could relate with.

Most of all it demonstrated to me as a young girl the incredible power of Jesus to make a dramatic difference in the life of one who believes. It is a book that made a lasting impression on me and gave me a heart for the country of India.

The Vegetarian Culinarians Cook Pasta

Authors: Lucinda Wallace and Heather Wallace

Fantastic!
This one's sure to become a favorite in any kitchen. I knew the recipes were a hit when my non-vegetarian husband started requesting them. I served Mostaccioli Rigati with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes at a dinner party and ran out, because there were so many requests for seconds. The recipes are easy-to-follow and the resulting meals are sensational. If you love delicious home-cooked pasta, this is the book for you. Cooking is fun again! I can't wait to make Creole Rigatoni, Broccoli-stuffed Shells with Creamy Cheddar Sauce, Tortellini with Herbed Vegetables and Pepper Jack Mac again. Oh, what the heck; I can't wait to make them all again! Yum!

Vegetarian Student Cook Book (The Really Useful Series)
Published in Paperback by The Rutland Group (August, 1995)
Author: Silvana Franco
Average review score:

Easiest Ever Cookery
Have you ever been hungry, but thought there was nothing in your pantry or fridge to make? If only you owned this book, then this common conundrum would never happen to you again!

Silvana spends the first chapter teaching you how to stock your pantry up cheaply and easily. The rest of the book is full of yummy recipes based on a few easy-to-find ingredients, such as potatoes, onions, bread, and cheddar cheese.

Not surprisingly, out of the dozens of cookbooks I own, this is the one book I find myself turning to weekly.

One warning, the book is exceptionally English, so watch out for different names for things--the infamous "courgette" comes to mind--and for just a few ingredients that are hard to find stateside, such as double cream.
